JPG to PNG: when the switch makes sense
JPG is the standard format for photos, but it cannot store transparency and loses a little quality every time it is saved. PNG is lossless and supports a transparent background, which makes it the right choice for logos, signatures, screenshots, product images for online shops and anything you plan to edit further. BestConverter converts one JPG or a whole batch to PNG directly in your browser.
What you can do before converting
- Make the background transparent: remove a white or other plain background with adjustable tolerance and edge smoothing. The background colour is detected from the image edges, or picked by clicking the preview. Choose whether to remove only the background around the subject or every pixel of that colour, so white areas inside a logo can stay.
- Crop to content: after removing the background, trim the empty transparent border so the PNG fits the subject tightly.
- Resize: scale by percentage, limit the longest side (for example 1920 px, or 512 px for icons), or enter an exact width and height.
- Compare on any background: check the result on a checkerboard, white or dark background to spot leftover halos before you download.
Honest about file size
A PNG of a photo is normally several times larger than the original JPG, because PNG keeps every pixel. BestConverter measures the real PNG size before you convert and shows the size of every file afterwards. It also writes the most compact PNG type that is still exact, for example greyscale for black-and-white scans or an indexed palette for simple graphics, and chooses the best compression filter for each row of pixels.
Private by design
Your photos are processed on your own device and never uploaded. Photos are rotated upright from their EXIF orientation, the print resolution (DPI) is kept, and camera metadata such as GPS location is left out of the PNG. Very large photos may need a smaller Resize setting on phones because of device memory.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
JPG uses lossy compression designed for photos, while PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger. That is the price of a lossless file you can edit and re-save without further quality loss; use the Resize option if you need a smaller file.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No converter can restore detail that JPG compression already removed. What PNG gives you is that no further quality is lost from now on, plus support for a transparent background.
How do I convert a JPG to PNG with a transparent background?
Turn on "Make background transparent": the colour is detected from the image edges, or you can click the background in the preview to pick it. Raise the tolerance if light-grey shadows or JPG noise remain, and use edge smoothing to avoid a white halo.
Can it remove a busy or photographic background?
No. The transparency option removes a plain, evenly coloured background such as white paper, a studio backdrop or a solid colour. It is not an AI cutout tool, so a street or a room behind the subject will not be removed cleanly.
Will my phone photos come out sideways?
No. BestConverter reads the EXIF orientation tag that phones add and turns every photo upright before saving the PNG. Other camera metadata such as date and GPS location is not copied.
Is it safe to convert private photos here?
