A Word file you can actually edit
Real structure, not just text
Headings are recognised by font size and weight, wrapped lines are joined back into paragraphs, bullet lists become real Word lists and aligned columns become Word tables.
Fonts, styles and images kept
Bold, italic, font sizes, font families, text colours, superscripts and alignment are carried over. Photos and drawings are placed where they were, and two-column pages are read in the right order.
Two conversion modes
Editable text gives a normal document that reflows as you type. Exact layout keeps every page looking like the PDF, with text in positioned boxes over the page graphics.
OCR for scanned PDFs, on your device
Pages without a text layer are detected automatically and can be read with OCR in 28 languages. Everything runs in your browser, so your documents are never uploaded.
How to convert PDF to Word and keep it editable
A PDF is made for reading and printing, not for editing. BestConverter turns it back into a Word document (DOCX) by analysing every page in your browser: it reads the text with its fonts, finds the reading order, rebuilds paragraphs and keeps the images, without uploading your file anywhere.
What the converter rebuilds
- Paragraphs and line breaks: lines wrapped by the PDF are joined into flowing paragraphs, hyphenated words are rejoined, and short lines such as addresses keep their line breaks.
- Headings: larger or bold titles get Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and a table of contents work straight away.
- Lists and tables: bullet points become Word bullet lists, numbered items keep their numbers, and aligned columns become editable tables.
- Formatting: bold, italic, font size, font family, colour, alignment, indents and paragraph spacing.
- Images and drawings: photos and vector graphics such as charts and logos are placed in the document where they appeared.
- Columns: two- and three-column pages are read column by column instead of across the page.
Tips for the best result
- For a scanned document, choose the right OCR language before converting. Mixed languages work best with the main language selected.
- If the PDF uses unusual fonts, install them or accept the substitute Word picks. The text stays fully editable either way.
- For forms and brochures where the look matters, choose Exact layout. For everything you plan to rewrite, choose Editable text.
- Need only a chapter? Enter a page range to get a smaller, faster file.
- Under More options you can leave out images, turn off table detection or let pages run on without a page break after every PDF page.
The conversion is free, with no sign-up, no email, no watermark and no upload. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer and Google Docs.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to convert PDF to Word online here?
Yes. The PDF is read and converted inside your browser on your own device and is never sent to a server. Only the OCR language data is downloaded once, the first time you use OCR for a language.
How do I convert PDF to Word without losing formatting?
Choose Editable text for reports, contracts and articles: paragraphs, headings, lists, tables and images flow from page to page as you edit. Choose Exact layout for forms, flyers and designed pages, where every block of text stays at its original position on top of the page graphics.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
Yes. Scanned pages have no selectable text, so BestConverter detects them and offers OCR (optical character recognition). Pick the language of the document for the best accuracy, and proofread the result: clean, straight pages at 300 dpi give the best text.
Does PDF to Word keep tables, headers and page numbers?
Text laid out in aligned columns becomes a Word table, with a bold first row repeated as a header row. Repeated headers, footers and page numbers move into the Word header and footer, and when you convert the whole document, page numbers become live fields. Tables drawn as pictures stay as images.
Why does my Word file look slightly different from the PDF?
A PDF stores the exact position of every character, while Word reflows text. If a font used in the PDF is not installed on your computer, Word substitutes a similar one, which can change line breaks. Exact layout keeps the original positions when the look matters more than editing.
Can I convert several PDFs or only some pages?
Yes. Add several PDFs at once to get one Word file per PDF, downloadable together as a ZIP. For a single PDF you can enter a page range such as 1-3, 7. There is no page limit, only your device memory.
