Features

Tables that are ready to calculate

Real columns, not one cell per line

Rows and columns are rebuilt from the position of every word, so left, right and centre aligned columns line up. Cells that wrap over several lines are joined back into one cell, and headers that span columns become merged cells.

Numbers and dates you can sum

Amounts like 1,234.50, 1.234,50 €, (45.00) or 12.5% become real numbers with a matching format, and dates like 03.04.2025 or 3 Apr 2025 become real Excel dates. Codes with leading zeros stay as text.

See the table before you convert

The options window shows the detected table for any page, with numbers and dates highlighted. Choose tables only or all text, pick the pages, and get one sheet per page, per table or a single sheet with repeated headers removed.

Scans too, and still private

Pages without a text layer are read with OCR in 20 languages, right in your browser. Several PDFs can be converted in one go. No account, no watermark, no upload.

How to convert PDF to Excel without losing the columns

Copying a table out of a PDF usually gives you one long column of text, broken numbers and dates that Excel cannot sort. BestConverter rebuilds the table instead: every word is placed by its position on the page, rows and columns are detected, and the result is written to a real spreadsheet you can filter, sort and calculate with. It works in your browser, so bank statements, invoices and reports stay on your device.

What you get in the spreadsheet

  • One sheet per page, one sheet per table, or all pages in one sheet with repeated table headers removed.
  • Numbers, currency amounts and percentages as real values with a number format, negatives in brackets included.
  • Dates as real Excel dates in the order the document uses, day first or month first.
  • Long account or reference numbers and codes with leading zeros kept as text, so no digits are lost.
  • Column widths set to fit the content.

Tips for the best result

Use "Tables only" for statements and price lists, and "All text" when you also need titles, notes and totals that sit outside the table. If no table is found anywhere in the PDF, its text is exported row by row instead of giving you an empty workbook. A decimal comma is usually detected automatically; otherwise set it under Advanced options. For scanned documents choose the OCR language that matches the text. Use the Pages field to convert just the pages you need, which is also faster on a phone.

Other formats

Besides Excel XLSX you can save an OpenDocument spreadsheet for LibreOffice or a CSV file for databases and accounting software. CSV keeps one sheet per file, so several sheets are downloaded together as a ZIP. When you convert several PDFs at once, each one becomes its own workbook.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to convert PDF to Excel online here?

Yes. The PDF is read and the spreadsheet is built inside your browser on your own device. Only the OCR language data (a few megabytes) is downloaded the first time you convert a scanned page; your file never leaves your device.

Why does a PDF table paste into Excel as one column?

Copy and paste only carries the text, not the layout, so every line lands in a single cell. This converter groups the words of each page into rows by their baseline, splits each row at wide gaps and finds the column boundaries from where text sits across many rows, with or without ruling lines. The preview shows the result before you convert.

Will the numbers be real numbers in Excel?

Yes, when "Convert numbers, currencies, percentages and dates" is on (it is by default). Thousands separators, decimal commas, currency symbols, percentages and negatives in brackets are recognised, and the decimal separator and date order are detected from the document. You can set them yourself under Advanced options, or turn conversion off to keep every cell exactly as text.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?

Yes. With OCR on Automatic, pages that have no text layer are recognised with OCR and then go through the same table detection. Choose the language of the document for the best result. OCR on a photo or a low quality scan is less exact than a PDF with real text, so check the result.

How do I put all PDF pages into one Excel sheet?

Choose "All in one sheet" and the tables of every page are stacked into one sheet. When a table continues on the next page with the same header row, the repeated header is left out so you get one continuous table. You can also get one sheet per page or one sheet per table.

Is there a file size limit for PDF to Excel?

There is no file count or size limit, only your device memory. Very complex layouts, such as tables nested in tables, rotated column labels or charts, may need small fixes in Excel afterwards. Password protected PDFs can be opened if you type the password.
