Features

A full transcription studio, free and private

Your video never leaves your device

Speech recognition (the open-source Whisper model) runs inside your browser. The video is not uploaded anywhere, so interviews, meetings and lectures stay private. The speech model is downloaded once and then kept by your browser.

Edit next to the video

The transcript appears beside a player with live captions. Click any timestamp to jump there, fix words as you watch, delete lines and use find and replace to correct a name everywhere at once.

Transcripts and subtitles in one go

Download a clean TXT transcript with or without timestamps, a Word document, or SRT and VTT subtitles timed to the speech. Several videos can be transcribed in one batch.

65+ languages and English translation

Pick the spoken language or let it be detected. Whisper can also translate speech from other languages straight into English. Choose Fast, Balanced or Accurate to trade speed for precision.

How to transcribe video to text in your browser

Upload a video, choose the spoken language and click Transcribe. BestConverter extracts the sound track, cuts it into short pieces at natural pauses and runs the Whisper speech recognition model on each piece, all inside your browser. When it finishes you get the full transcript next to the video, with every line linked to its moment in the clip.

Choose the right output

  • TXT: a clean transcript in paragraphs, or one line per segment with timestamps, ready for notes, articles, show notes and search.
  • Word (DOCX): a formatted document with the video name, length and language, for sharing, quoting and editing.
  • SRT: the standard subtitle file for YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, video editors and media players.
  • VTT: WebVTT subtitles for HTML5 and web video players.

Tips for better results

  • Select the spoken language instead of automatic detection. It is faster and avoids mixed-language mistakes.
  • Use Balanced for everyday videos and Accurate for interviews, lectures or noisy recordings.
  • When you pick English for a transcript, a more precise English-only model is used automatically.
  • Use find and replace to fix names and terms that were misheard throughout the transcript.
  • On a computer with a good graphics card, try the WebGPU option in Advanced options; it is often much faster.
  • For very long videos on phones or older computers, transcribe in parts with the start and stop times.

Translation works only into English. Speaker names are not detected, and videos protected with DRM cannot be read. Everything is free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of videos.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to transcribe a private video here?

Yes. The sound track is extracted and transcribed on your own computer or phone, and the video itself is never sent anywhere. The speech model is downloaded once (about 40 MB for Fast, 80 MB for Balanced and 250 MB for Accurate) and your browser keeps it for next time.

What video formats can I transcribe to text?

MP4, MOV, M4V and WEBM are usually read directly by your browser. MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG, MTS and other formats are handled by a built-in video decoder that downloads once (about 31 MB). The video must contain a sound track.

How long does it take to transcribe a video?

It depends on your device and the accuracy you pick. Fast and Balanced are the quickest choices; the Accurate model and phones are noticeably slower. Silent parts are skipped, progress and a time estimate are shown, and you can cancel at any moment.

How accurate is the video transcript?

Clear speech with little background noise usually comes out very well, especially with the Balanced or Accurate model and the right language selected. Strong accents, music, crosstalk and technical terms cause more mistakes, which you can fix in the editor before downloading. Speakers are not labelled.

Can I get a transcript of a video in Word format?

Yes. Tick Word under Download as to get a DOCX file with the video name, length and language at the top, followed by the transcript in paragraphs. Turn on timestamps if you want each line to start with its time in the video.

Can I transcribe only part of a long video?

Yes, when you transcribe one video at a time. Open Advanced options and enter a start and stop time, for example 10:00 to 25:00. Timestamps in the result still match the original video, so subtitles stay in sync.
