How to unlock a PDF
Add one or more protected PDFs.
Type the open password if asked. Files with only print or copy restrictions unlock without one.
Download the unlocked PDF, or convert it, save it or open it in the editor.
A real unlock, not a screenshot of your pages
True decryption, original quality
The file is decrypted object by object, so text, fonts, vector graphics, links, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they were. Nothing is turned into an image.
Restrictions removed automatically
If a PDF opens without a password but blocks printing, copying or editing, it is unlocked straight away. You only type a password when the file really needs one.
Every standard encryption level
Works with 40-bit and 128-bit RC4, AES-128 and AES-256, the newest level in the PDF 2.0 standard, including files that use compressed object streams.
Private by design
Your PDF and its password are processed in your browser and are never uploaded. No sign-up, no watermark, no file limit beyond your device memory.
Unlock PDF files without losing quality
Many online unlockers open the PDF and then print every page to an image. The result has no selectable text, larger files and blurry graphics. BestConverter decrypts the file instead: it reads the PDF's security settings, checks your password, decrypts every text string and data stream with the same algorithm the file was locked with, and saves a normal, unencrypted PDF named yourfile-unlocked.pdf. The page content is exactly what it was before.
What gets removed
- The open password, so the file opens in any viewer without a prompt.
- Permission restrictions on printing, copying text, editing, commenting, filling forms and assembling pages.
Supported protection
The tool supports the PDF standard security handler in all its versions: RC4 40-bit and 128-bit used by older files, AES-128, and AES-256 as used by current software and PDF 2.0. Passwords with accents or other non-English characters are supported. Certificate-based encryption and third-party DRM are not, because they do not use a password.
Tips if the password is rejected
Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock and the keyboard language first. The password box has a Show button so you can see what you typed, and you can retry as often as you need without adding the file again.
Use it responsibly
Unlock only documents you own or have permission to change, for example your own bank statements, payslips or archived contracts that you no longer want to type a password for. Because everything runs locally in your browser, the document and the password stay on your computer or phone.
After unlocking
Download the PDF, save it to My documents, convert it to Word, Excel, PowerPoint or images, or open it in the PDF editor to sign, annotate or edit it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I unlock a PDF without the password?
Only files that open freely but block printing, copying or editing can be unlocked without one, and that happens automatically. If the PDF asks for a password to open, you need that password: the tool does not guess or crack passwords.
Can I unlock a PDF that will not let me print or copy text?
Yes. Those limits come from a permissions (owner) password, and the tool removes them without asking you for anything. The result prints and copies normally in any PDF reader.
Will the unlocked PDF keep its text, fonts and quality?
Yes. The content is decrypted, not re-rendered, so text stays selectable and searchable and fonts, images, links and forms are kept. In the rare case that this fails, the tool rebuilds the file from sharp page images with an invisible text layer and tells you so.
Is it safe to unlock a PDF online here?
Yes. The file and the password are processed on your own device in the browser and are never uploaded to a server.
Can I unlock several PDFs at once?
Yes. Add several files together. A password you type is tried automatically on the other files, so files that share a password unlock with a single entry, and you can skip any file you have no password for.
Why will my PDF not unlock?
PDFs protected with a digital certificate or a vendor DRM plugin do not use a password and can only be opened with that certificate or software. Removing protection also invalidates any digital signature in the file.
